India Diversifies LNG Supplies Amid Gulf Disruptions
India has significantly diversified its liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies in recent months, following a sharp decline in shipments from Qatar due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. According to data from Kpler, the US emerged as India's largest LNG supplier in August, accounting for around 35% of total imports, while Nigeria became the second-largest source.
In August, India imported 858,500 tonnes of LNG from the US, an increase of 18.6% from July's 723,800 tonnes. Meanwhile, Nigerian supplies rose by 84%, reaching 540,700 tonnes, which accounted for around 22% of total imports. Oman and the UAE also supplied significant quantities, at 524,700 tonnes and 244,400 tonnes, respectively.
The shift in LNG suppliers comes as disruptions linked to the US-Iran conflict and attacks on energy infrastructure have complicated supplies from the Gulf. Qatar, which previously accounted for about 45% of India's gas imports, has faced disruptions after an attack on its Ras Laffan Industrial City in March. It is estimated that restoring Qatar's full capacity could take months.
