India Egg Prices Soar Amid Corn Shortage Fuelled by Ethanol Demand

Egg prices in India have surged by 35% to 40% from last year, causing financial strain on households and poultry farmers. The sharp rise in farm gate prices has reached ₹7 per egg, while retail prices have climbed to ₹8.50 to ₹9 per egg in many markets.

The increase in corn demand due to India's E20 ethanol policy is partly responsible for the shortage of corn, which accounts for 55% to 65% of poultry feed. Corn prices have risen sharply in recent years, from around ₹14,000 per tonne three years ago to approximately ₹26,000 per tonne today.

Poultry farmers face higher feed expenses due to reduced corn availability in open markets and the need for additional corn imports. Experts warn that egg prices could rise further during the coming winter if alternative feed or ethanol production options do not emerge.
