India Expands LNG Sourcing to 15 Countries Amid Geopolitical Supply Risks
India has expanded its liquefied natural gas (LNG) sourcing to 15 countries, up from six previously, in an effort to mitigate supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions and maritime transit challenges. The country has also widened its crude oil sourcing portfolio to 41 countries, from 27 before.
The diversification of LNG sources reduces dependence on any particular country or region, allowing India to better manage supply disruptions and market volatility, said Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi in a written reply to an unstarred question.
India's strategic petroleum storage capacity will also be increased with the establishment of two commercial-cum-strategic petroleum reserve facilities with a combined capacity of 6.5 million metric tonnes in Odisha and Karnataka, although construction progress was not provided in the government's latest response.
