India Eyes Arctic LNG Purchases Amid US Sanctions on Russia

India is considering purchasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Arctic region as part of its strategy to diversify energy sources. This move is a push to deepen energy and logistics cooperation between India and Russia, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko.

New Delhi's interest in Russian LNG is significant, especially given India's assertion of its right to energy security despite the threat of US sanctions. The US has sanctioned Russia's Arctic LNG 2 project and tightened curbs on Russian LNG exports earlier this year, citing the Ukraine conflict.

Russia and India have a long history of cooperation in the oil and gas sector, with Indian companies involved in several major projects. In fact, 'for decades, the joint development of oil and gas fields has been the main area of cooperation with India,' Rudenko said.
