India Forces Households to Switch from LPG to Piped Natural Gas

The Indian government is pushing to increase the use of piped natural gas (PNG) in areas where pipeline infrastructure has already reached households. Under new directions, consumers may be required to switch from LPG if they receive an official notice to adopt PNG.

Households in areas where PNG is available will be identified by states and Union Territories, who will then send a notice asking them to obtain a PNG connection within a specified timeframe. Failure to comply after receiving the notice could result in the cancellation of the existing LPG connection.

The government expects a pipeline-based system to make gas distribution easier to monitor and manage digitally. To speed up the transition, a district-level coordination mechanism is being planned, with oil marketing companies and city gas distribution companies establishing PNG coordination committees in their respective areas.
