India Lifts Ban on Wheat Exports After Four-Year Freeze

India has lifted its four-year ban on wheat exports in an effort to boost farmers' incomes, according to a recent announcement by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

The ban was imposed in May 2022 and was revised from prohibited to free with immediate effect.

India produced nearly 120.65 million tonnes of wheat during the country's crop year 2025-26, a 2.3% increase from the previous year.

Food and public distribution secretary Sanjeev Chopra stated that since domestic prices of wheat were currently depressed, allowing exports would increase domestic prices, thus boosting farmers' incomes.
