India Lifts Export Ban on Wheat Flour Amid Global Market Shift

The Indian government has lifted its ban on exporting wheat flour and related products, effective immediately. This decision was made after amending the Export Policy of Wheat Flour and Related Products provision.

The export ban was first imposed in July 2022 due to a surge in local prices of wheat and atta following a nearly 40% rally in global rates after the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The war had disrupted logistics in the Black Sea region, which accounts for about a quarter of all wheat trade.

India attempted to fill this vacuum by increasing its own exports, but now the government has opened up the market again, allowing free exports of Wheat flour and its concomitant products for the first time since 2022. The previous halt had set an upper limit of 5 million tonnes per annum.
