India Lifts Export Restrictions on Wheat Flour Amid Record Foodgrain Production

The Indian government has lifted export restrictions on wheat flour and other related products. The move comes after the country's total foodgrain production reached an all-time high of 376.563 million tonnes in 2025-26, up 5.3 per cent from the previous year.

Export restrictions were imposed in 2022 to ensure domestic food security and contain rising prices, but with improved stock availability, the government has decided to permit exports without restrictions. This includes wheat or meslin flour (atta), maida, semolina (rava), wholemeal atta, and resultant atta.

The Centre had earlier imposed curbs on wheat and wheat product exports due to disruptions in global supplies following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which boosted overseas demand for Indian wheat and pushed domestic prices higher. India's foodgrain production increased significantly last year, with rice production at 154.024 million tonnes and wheat production estimated at 120.657 million tonnes.
