India Lifts Four-Year Wheat Export Ban Amid Surging Domestic Production
India has lifted its four-year ban on wheat exports as part of an effort to boost farmers' incomes, according to an official notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
The ban was imposed in May 2022 and restricted the export policy of wheat to prohibited. However, with immediate effect, the DGFT has revised this policy to free.
This move comes as India produced nearly 120.65 million tonnes of wheat during its crop year 2025-26 (July 2025-June 2026), a 2.3% increase from the previous crop year.
According to Food and Public Distribution Secretary Sanjeev Chopra, allowing exports will increase domestic prices, thus boosting farmers' incomes and encouraging good sowing in the forthcoming season.
