India Lifts Wheat Export Ban Amid Depressed Domestic Prices
The Indian government has lifted its ban on wheat exports, citing the need to boost farmers' income amid depressed domestic prices. The decision was made effective immediately, with the export policy for wheat revised from 'prohibited' to 'free'.
The government had banned wheat exports in May 2022 to control rising domestic prices, but allowed the export of 50 lakh tonnes of wheat and 10 lakh tonnes of wheat products early this year. Out of 60 lakh tonnes allowed earlier, 2.5 lakh tonnes have been shipped so far.
Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said the decision was aimed at increasing domestic market prices and encouraging good sowing in the coming rabi season, allowing farmers to get better prices. He added that there is adequate stock of wheat available in the country, sufficient to meet demand and check prices.
