India Lifts Wheat Export Ban Amid Depressed Domestic Prices
The Indian government has lifted its ban on wheat exports, citing depressed domestic prices as the reason. The decision aims to boost farmers' income and encourage good sowing in the upcoming rabi season.
India is the world's second-largest wheat producer, and it had banned wheat exports in May 2022 to control rising domestic prices. However, with current domestic prices depressed, the government has revised the export policy of wheat from 'prohibited' to 'free' with immediate effect.
The ban on wheat flour and other products such as maida, semolina, and wholemeal atta has also been removed. The Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra stated that the decision is in the interest of farmers and will increase domestic market prices.
