India Lifts Wheat Export Ban Amid Record Harvest
India has lifted its wheat export ban after four consecutive seasons of recovery, allowing for greater market access and potentially easing pressure on government storage facilities.
The country recorded a record wheat harvest of over 120 million tonnes in the 2025-26 crop year, with government stockpiles reaching historic highs. The lifting of restrictions puts wheat and related products back into the free export category, giving traders greater flexibility to sell Indian wheat overseas.
However, Indian wheat remains more expensive than supplies from major exporters such as Russia, Ukraine, and Australia due to the country's Minimum Support Price (MSP), handling, transport, and port costs. This makes it harder for Indian grain to compete in global markets.
