India May Face Up to 100% Tariffs on Russian Crude Oil Purchases
India may face up to 100% tariffs on its Russian crude oil purchases as part of a new US sanctions bill. The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, if passed, would give President Trump the authority to impose such tariffs on countries importing large quantities of Russian energy.
In August 2025, Trump announced 25% penal tariffs on India for its purchase of crude oil from Russia. However, India continued buying Russian crude despite facing a 50% tariff, and even after the US imposed sanctions on some Russian oil firms in October 2025.
Experts believe that India will not stop buying Russian crude, as it has become an essential component of the country's energy security and refining economics. With Russia supplying approximately 55% of India's crude imports in July, a complete halt to Russian crude imports is seen as unlikely in the near term.
