India Oil Import Bill Set for Boost as West Asia Tensions Rise
India is bracing itself for a potentially higher oil import bill due to rising crude prices. The Brent crude futures rose by over 2% to around $99 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained nearly 3% to about $94 a barrel. This increase in prices follows attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure and heightened tensions involving Iran and the US.
The country's reliance on imported oil makes it particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in global crude prices. India imports more than 88% of its crude oil requirements, which are used as the primary raw material for producing fuels such as petrol and diesel.
A sustained rise in crude prices could increase India's import expenditure and put additional pressure on inflation, especially through higher fuel and transportation costs. The developments in West Asia are being closely watched in India as any prolonged disruption to global oil supplies could further push up international crude prices.
