India Reaches 20% Ethanol Blending Target Five Years Ahead of Schedule
India's Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme has achieved a significant milestone, reaching 20% ethanol blending in petrol just five years ahead of its original target. The programme was implemented through a phased and scientifically validated process that involved various stakeholders, including NITI Aayog, automobile manufacturers, Oil Marketing Companies, and technical institutions.
The Government claims that the EBP Programme has saved over Rs.1.97 lakh crore in foreign exchange, substituted nearly 316 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil, reduced around 952 lakh metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions, and transferred over Rs. 1.66 lakh crore to farmers.
Despite concerns raised by some about the impact on water consumption and vehicle performance, the Government asserts that E20 is a safe, cleaner, and technologically superior fuel when used in accordance with prescribed specifications and manufacturer recommendations.
