India Secures Fuel Supplies for Mauritius Amid Ongoing Global Uncertainty
The India-Mauritius energy pact is more than just a commercial fuel supply agreement. It represents an important extension of India's role as a provider of regional energy security, while strengthening its strategic position in the western Indian Ocean.
In August, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri visited Mauritius, where Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) and State Trading Corporation (STC) of Mauritius signed a five-year agreement for cooperation in the oil and gas sector. The deal provides Mauritius with an assured long-term supply of petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel.
The agreement is significant because Mauritius is structurally dependent on imported energy, with 90.8% of its total primary energy requirement coming from imports. The STC imports over 1.1 million tonnes of petroleum products annually for domestic and international needs.
