India Seeks LNG Import Alternatives with Compressed Bio-Gas Scheme

The Indian government has approved a Rs 23,731 crore scheme to promote compressed bio-gas production, aiming to reduce reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The GOBARdhan scheme, which stands for Galvanizing Organic Bio- Agro Resources Dhan, seeks to increase the domestic supply of compressed bio-gas. This is significant in light of the ongoing Middle East crisis, which has disrupted India's LNG imports.

India currently imports around 50% of its natural gas consumption, with 55-60% of LNG imports affected by the Strait of Hormuz disruption. The government sees compressed bio-gas as a domestic solution to this problem.
