India Sees Export Window for Wheat Amid Global Price Rally
India's wheat export prospects have been revived as global wheat futures rallied by over 14% in the last month, creating an opportunity for Indian exporters to tap into the Bangladesh market. The government has allowed 5 million tonnes of wheat exports and 1 million tonnes of wheat products in 2026, citing surplus stocks.
The total stock of wheat in the central pool stands at 57.8 million metric tonnes, including a carry forward stock of 22 million tonnes as on April 1, 2026, and procurement of 35.8 million tonnes during the rabi marketing season 2026-27. The government needs about 21 million tonnes for the Public Distribution System and Other Welfare Schemes, and 7.5 million tonnes for the buffer stock.
The increase in freight charges due to the re-escalation of the war in the Middle East and concerns about wheat production in key origins like Europe, USA, and Australia have fueled the rise in global wheat prices, bringing export parity for Indian wheat exports only to Bangladesh.
