India Sees USD 1.5 Billion Wheat Export Opportunity Amid Global Market Shift
India has a significant opportunity to expand its wheat exports, which could reach over USD 1.5 billion in value. This is according to an ASSOCHAM report, which highlights that India's record wheat harvest and surplus position have created room for increased exports while meeting domestic food security needs.
The report notes that India produced a record 120.7 million tonnes (MMT) of wheat in 2025-26, making it the world's second-largest wheat producer. Additionally, the Central Pool had 51.3 MMT of wheat stocks as of May 28, 2026, exceeding the prescribed buffer norm.
India has a price advantage in global markets, with its wheat MSP for FY2026-27 equivalent to around USD 268 per tonne, compared to an international wheat price of about USD 303 per tonne in May 2026. This creates a difference of nearly USD 35 per tonne.
Major importers such as Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Algeria, Morocco, and the Philippines could provide scope for gradual expansion of Indian wheat exports. However, long-term success would depend on consistent quality, better logistics, improved storage and testing facilities, and greater clarity in export policies.
