India Sets Target for Boosting Domestic LPG Output Amid Supply Disruptions
The Indian government has introduced a new framework to boost the country's LPG production in response to disruptions in imported cooking gas supplies. Under this order, 21 refineries and upstream oil and gas producers will be required to increase their LPG output whenever supply constraints arise.
According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, the combined production potential under the new framework has been set at 63,810 tonnes per day, which is equivalent to about 70% of India's daily LPG consumption. This move comes after the recent West Asia conflict exposed India's vulnerability to imported LPG supplies.
India consumes around 33.2 million tonnes of LPG annually, with only 13.1 million tonnes produced domestically and more than 64% met through imports via the Strait of Hormuz. The new order establishes a permanent mechanism that can be activated whenever the government determines that additional LPG output is required to ensure adequate availability and fair distribution.
