India Turns to US for LPG and LNG Amid West Asia Crisis
India has been increasing its purchases of LPG and LNG from the United States due to disruptions in supplies from traditional Gulf suppliers, according to data from maritime intelligence firm Kpler. In August, India imported around 0.62 million tonnes of LPG from the US, accounting for over 73% of the country's total LPG imports.
This shift has been driven by the conflict in West Asia, which has constrained supplies from countries such as the UAE and Qatar. The Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for crude oil and gas exports, has been closed following the outbreak of war between Iran and the US.
For LNG, imports from Qatar have fallen to zero in April, while US supplies rose to around 0.75 million tonnes in August. This diversification is expected to continue, with India sourcing incremental cargoes not only from the US but also from other Atlantic Basin and non-traditional suppliers.
