Indian Equities Rally on Crude Oil Price Decline, Nifty 50 Hits New High
The Indian benchmark index, BSE SENSEX, rose to 78,639.03 on Monday, August 3, after a sharp decline in crude oil prices fueled a rally in import-dependent equities.
The NSE Nifty 50 outperformed, gaining 390.70 points or 1.60% to close at 24,774.30, following the implementation of the exchange's new Closing Auction Session for futures and options-eligible stocks.
The decline in oil prices was driven by President Trump's announcement that he had refrained from launching a military strike against Iran and instead opted for negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. India is one of the world's largest crude oil importers, making the sustained decline in energy prices significant for corporate earnings and the broader macroeconomic backdrop.
The BSE SENSEX opened sharply higher, gaining 788.7 points or 10.09% to start the session at 78,883.34, while the Nifty 50 added 189.1 points to begin trading at 24,572.70. The broader indices traded in the green in early trading, with the BSE Midcap Select Index up 123.12 points and the BSE Smallcap Select Index adding 33.45 points or 0.38%.
