Indian Equity Market Closes Week in Red Amid Volatile Oil Prices
The Indian equity market closed the week in red on August 7, following profit-booking and selling pressure in key sectors. The BSE Sensex dropped 455.59 points to finish at 78,499.17 points, while the NSE Nifty 50 slipped 65.35 points to close at 24,570.65 points.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that market sentiment remains measured due to the absence of a definitive geopolitical resolution in the Middle East, which continues to keep crude oil prices volatile. He also highlighted that gold has strengthened on renewed safe-haven demand and a softer US dollar.
Domestically, earnings from industry bellwethers have been in line with or ahead of expectations, providing a constructive backdrop for sector-specific optimism and investment opportunities. SBI's strong performance, underpinned by healthy credit growth, improving asset quality, and resilient margins, has reinforced confidence in the banking and PSU banking segments.
