Indian Markets Plummet Amid Geopolitical Tensions and Elevated Oil Prices
Indian stock markets ended lower on Monday, August 24, as persistent geopolitical tensions and elevated crude oil prices dampened investor appetite. The benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty declined by 171.72 points (0.22%) and 32.95 points (0.14%), respectively.
The 30-share BSE Sensex failed to carry forward its initial momentum, settling at 77,369.11 after dropping as low as 77,201.66 during the day. Among the 30 Sensex firms, Adani Ports and Tata Consultancy Services were among the notable laggards.
Renewed concerns over the Middle East, coupled with Washington's promise of 'economic D-Day' against Iran and its trading partners, kept investors wary of further escalation. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, dropped 1.68% to $92.80 per barrel.
'Markets remained cautious ahead of fresh US sanctions,' said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money. 'Caution dominated market sentiment as investors are awaiting fresh sanctions from the US on Iran later today.'
