Indian Markets Plummet as Crude Oil Prices Soar
Indian equity markets suffered a decline on Tuesday due to a combination of factors, including profit-booking, escalating geopolitical anxiety in the Middle East, and a sharp spike in global crude oil prices.
The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex settled at 78,154.25, registering a steep decline of 388.19 points or 0.49 percent. The broader NSE Nifty 50 also mirrored this downward trajectory, shedding 112.10 points or 0.46 percent.
The surge in crude oil prices was the primary catalyst for Tuesday's market retreat, with Brent crude futures jumping over 2 percent during Asian trading hours and hovering near the USD 90 per barrel threshold.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, stated that 'a sharp rebound in crude prices shifted market attention back to inflation risks, tempering investor enthusiasm despite a supportive earnings backdrop.'
