Indian Markets Slide Amid Iran Conflict and Rising Crude Oil Prices
Indian markets plummeted on Wednesday due to escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia and rising global crude oil prices. The benchmark BSE Sensex dropped 713.42 points, or 0.93 per cent, to 76,230.86, while the broader NSE Nifty 50 declined 197.80 points, or 0.82 per cent, to 23,858.00.
Ajay Bagga, a banking and market expert, attributed the decline to global factors dominating India's strong domestic picture. 'Risk-off globally, with renewed escalation in the Iran war leading to a sharp spike in crude oil prices, points to inflation staying higher for longer,' he said.
V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that the market remains caught between conflicting drivers. 'The domestic tailwinds from impressive Q1 GDP numbers are big positives for the market, but the headwinds from the escalation of the US-Iran conflict and rising crude oil prices are equally strong,' he stated.
