Indian Markets Slide as West Asia Tensions Fuel Brent Crude Surge
Indian stock markets declined for the third consecutive session on September 2, 2026, as escalating tensions in West Asia pushed Brent crude prices toward $97 per barrel. The Nifty 50 index fell 0.59% to close at 23,914.45, while the BSE Sensex dropped 0.49% to finish at 76,570.35.
The ongoing geopolitical conflict in West Asia has heightened fears of supply chain disruptions and fueled concerns about rising energy costs. This has led to a 'risk-off' sentiment among traders, who are reducing exposure to sectors that could be squeezed by higher operating costs or global slowdowns.
Despite the market volatility, there was a positive development on the macroeconomic front. The Japan Credit Rating Agency (JCR) upgraded India's sovereign credit rating to 'A-' from 'BBB+', citing robust economic growth and improvements in the financial system.
