Indian Metal Exports Soar as Global Electrification Demand Grows
India's metal exports are surging as global demand for renewable energy and electric vehicles grows. The country is shipping out more aluminium, copper wire, and lead, with key export categories showing significant growth over the last two years.
The export of insulated copper winding wire, a crucial component for power equipment, has jumped by 58% in recent times. Refined lead shipments have also increased by 56%, totaling $928.38 million. Aluminium alloy exports rose by 24%, reaching $1.29 billion in the last fiscal year.
The growth reflects India's shift from being a basic commodity supplier to a more value-added manufacturing exporter. The trend is driven by international investments in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and grid modernization. Indian companies are reporting strong results, with firms like Hitachi Energy India noting double-digit revenue and order growth.
However, this export-led growth comes with specific challenges. India remains a net importer of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, necessary for the very technologies driving electrification. Local manufacturers are sensitive to global supply chain disruptions and price volatility in these raw materials.
