Indian Retail Gold Prices Fall as MCX Futures Remain Steady
Retail gold prices in India dropped by approximately ₹70 per gram on August 27, 2026. This decrease is seen across major metropolitan hubs in the country. However, gold futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) for the September 2026 expiry maintained their marginal gains, holding above the ₹1.60 lakh per 10 grams level.
The discrepancy between retail and futures prices is due to additional costs such as state-level levies, making charges, and distribution expenses that are included in retail pricing. Global gold valuations are heavily sensitive to US economic indicators, including the latest Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index. Investors are keenly awaiting policy signals from the US Federal Reserve.
The current price movement is driven by international macroeconomic factors. Regional price variations remain a constant feature of the Indian gold market, with differences in pricing between cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata largely attributable to varying local tax structures and logistics.
