Indian Rupee Falls Despite Weaker Dollar Amid Ongoing Oil Price Pressures
The Indian Rupee (INR) has declined against the US Dollar (USD) despite the Greenback hitting a three-month low. The USD/INR pair rose to near 95.72 as oil prices remained elevated, outweighing the weak USD.
Oil prices have remained high due to the US-Iran deadlock over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for almost 20% of global energy supply. US President Donald Trump warned that any country supporting Iran would face severe economic consequences.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) actively intervenes in forex markets to maintain a stable exchange rate and facilitate trade. Higher interest rates strengthen the Rupee, but the RBI's recent intervention has blurred the lines between improving market functioning and suppressing borrowing costs.
