Indian Soyabean Production Set to Fall Amid Erratic Monsoons and Farmer Shift
The Indian soyabean production is expected to decline by 8% in the upcoming marketing year, according to a report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). This fall is attributed to erratic monsoon rains and farmer diversification towards cotton and corn. The USDA forecasted production at 9.6 million tonnes, down from their previous estimate of 10.4 million tonnes.
The decline in soyabean production will lead to a decrease in crushing volumes by 6%, with expected drops in both production and yields. However, food-use consumption is expected to increase by 4% above the annual estimate, driven by rising demand for plant-based products such as tofu, soya milk, and soya flour.
The USDA also noted that India will bridge the resulting shortfall in edible oil supply by increasing imports of discounted soyabean oil. Additionally, soyabean exports are expected to hold steady at 25,000 tonnes, while imports are forecasted to increase by more than 100% from the previous annual forecast.
