Indian Stock Market Declines for Seventh Straight Session Amid Crude Price Concerns
The Indian stock market faced its seventh consecutive session of decline on Wednesday, August 19. The Nifty index fell by 0.32% to close at 24,078, while the Sensex dropped 0.42% to settle at 76,909.
Brent crude prices rose towards $92 a barrel, casting a shadow over investor sentiment and contributing to the market's decline. Sarvam Goel, Founder of Pocketful, said that 'crude at $92 remains the wall the market cannot get past.' Until oil prices come down, investors are advised to remain cautious.
Despite the broad sectoral damage, Nifty IT was a lone gainer, rising 0.4% and ending its four-day losing streak due to value buying and domestic capital rotation. However, Energy, FMCG, Defence, and Media bore the brunt of selling, with defence stocks plummeting over 1.5%. Max Health and Coal India were among the session's top laggards.
The Asian market also weighed on sentiment, with South Korea's Kospi plunging nearly 6% and triggering a trading curb. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell more than 3% as the technology-led rally reversed sharply under pressure from rising global bond yields and heavy semiconductor selling.
