Indian Stock Market Plummets as Crude Prices Soar to 4-Month High
India's benchmark equity indices plummeted at the opening of trading on Friday amid concerns over escalating tensions in West Asia and surging crude oil prices. The Nifty 50 index opened at 23,270.30, down 207.50 points or 0.88 per cent, while the BSE Sensex opened at 74,309.16, lower by 593.43 points or 0.79 per cent.
The surge in Brent crude oil prices to around USD 108.27 per barrel is adding pressure on India's economic growth and corporate earnings. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, warned that the market was facing stronger headwinds due to the geopolitical conflict escalation and rising crude prices.
Vijayakumar also highlighted the impact of rising US bond yields on global equities, stating that a correction in global markets was likely. On the domestic front, he noted the booming Indian IPO market, with heavy oversubscription and attractive listing gains drawing large numbers of investors.
