The Indian stock market continued to struggle on August 19, 2026, as the Nifty 50 and Sensex declined due to rising crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions, and concerns over global bond yields. The Nifty 50 opened down by a minimal 0.01% to 24,152.05, while the Sensex was 17.41 points lower at 77,218.05.

Throughout trading hours, both indices experienced further declines, with the Nifty dipping below 24,100 and the Sensex dropping more than 300 points. Reuters attributed the weakness to a combination of factors, including rising crude prices above $92 a barrel, tensions regarding the Strait of Hormuz, and increasing US Treasury yields.

The Indian currency opened at ₹95.72 per US dollar and was traded at ₹95.73 against the previous closing rate of ₹95.74. The market's performance reflects concerns over economic stability and potential volatility in global markets.
