Indian Stock Markets Slide as Crude Oil Prices Soar
Indian stock markets experienced a downturn on Wednesday due to rising crude oil prices. The Sensex, which represents 30 of India's largest publicly traded companies, dropped by 35.99 points to reach 78,097.31 in early trade.
The Nifty, a benchmark index for the Indian stock market, also fell by 31.15 points to 24,444.55. This decline was largely attributed to Brent crude oil prices surging to $90.01 per barrel, driven by geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran.
Experts point out that the ongoing skirmishes in the Strait of Hormuz are contributing to the rise in crude oil prices, which is affecting investor sentiment. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that 'the principal factor restraining a rally is the strengthening Brent crude which has again moved above $89 level.'
