Indian Stocks Decline Amid Rising Crude Oil Prices
The Indian stock market began the day on a downward trend on Wednesday, with the Sensex and Nifty indices experiencing losses. The BSE's benchmark Sensex dropped 35.99 points to 78,097.31 in early trade, while the NSE's Nifty skidded 31.15 points to 24,444.55. This decline was largely due to higher crude oil prices, with Brent crude trading 1.24% higher at USD 90.01 per barrel.
VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that the strengthening of Brent crude has been a major factor restraining the market's rally. He stated that the ongoing US-Iran skirmishes and the recent attack on a Panama-flagged container ship have also contributed to investor caution.
However, not all sectors were negatively impacted. State Bank of India, Tech Mahindra, Axis Bank, and Asian Paints were among the winners in early trade. In contrast, Bharti Airtel, Mahindra & Mahindra, UltraTech Cement, Adani Ports, Titan, and Bajaj Finance were among the laggards.
The Sensex continued to decline throughout the day, ultimately dropping 211.37 points to 77,953.66. The Nifty also fell, trading 65.10 points down at 24,411.15. This drop was a continuation of Tuesday's losses, when the Sensex dropped 388.19 points, or 0.49%, to settle at 78,154.25.
