Indian Stocks Tumble as Global Uncertainty and Oil Prices Weigh on Markets
The Indian stock market took a hit on Friday as global uncertainty and rising crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment. The benchmark Sensex opened 683.20 points lower, down 0.89 per cent at 75,708.19, while the Nifty declined 203.25 points to 23,666.35, a drop of 0.85 per cent.
Realty and metal stocks were among the hardest hit, falling by as much as 0.95 per cent and 0.92 per cent respectively. Other sectors such as consumer durables, PSU banks, autos, private banks, FMCG, and IT also declined by up to 0.60 per cent.
The weak opening mirrored losses across global markets, with Japan's Nikkei tumbling around 3 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng slumping more than 3 per cent, and South Korea's KOSPI plunging over 5 per cent. Overnight, Wall Street ended lower as well.
The international oil benchmark Brent crude remained above the $100-per-barrel mark, climbing 0.43 per cent to $100 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 0.69 per cent to $92.83 a barrel.
