India's ₹33-Lakh-Crore Gold Stockpile Could Be a Hidden Economic Stimulus
India's hidden stimulus is not just about monetary policy, but also about its massive gold stockpile. The country has an estimated ₹33-lakh-crore worth of gold reserves, which could potentially boost consumption and drive economic growth.
The retail market for gold in India is dominated by two purities: 24-karat and 22-karat. While the former is considered pure, the latter is preferred for jewelry due to its added strength and durability.
Gold prices in India are influenced by several factors, including international prices, exchange rates, and domestic demand, especially ahead of festivals. The latest gold rates show that Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Chennai all have the same price for 24-karat and 22-karat gold: ₹1,54,080 and ₹1,41,390 respectively.
Joyalukkas, Malabar Gold & Diamonds, and Tanishq are among the top jewellers in India, with their prices largely stable on September 14. However, there are slight variations in brand-specific pricing policies, procurement costs, and regional market conditions.
