India's Copper Demand Set to Surge with Rapid Electrification and Infrastructure Spending
India's copper demand is expected to surge over the next decade due to rapid electrification, renewable-energy expansion, EV adoption, power-grid modernization, and rising infrastructure spending.
Copper consumption in India was around 1.88 million tonnes in FY25, up 9.3% from the previous year.
Domestic supply remains constrained, creating opportunities for companies expanding mining, refining, and downstream capacity.
Hindustan Copper is one of the key players in the Indian copper market, with significant resources at Malanjkhand and Khetri.
The company is implementing expansion projects to increase mine production capacity to 12.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by FY31.
Hindustan Copper reported strong numbers in Q1FY27, with net sales jumping to ₹936.5 crore from ₹516.4 crore a year earlier and net profit surging to ₹352.6 crore from ₹134.3 crore a year earlier.
Other notable players in the Indian copper market include Hindalco Industries and Vedanta's Sterlite Copper.
