India's Economy at Risk as US Tariffs Hit Russian Oil Imports
The US threat of imposing 100% tariffs on countries buying Russian oil has sparked concerns about its impact on India's economy. According to Sachin Gupta, Chief Ratings Officer at CareEdge Ratings, this could lead to higher crude prices, inflation, and a widening current account deficit.
Russia is currently India's biggest supplier of crude, accounting for around 50% of the country's imports in July. If India is forced to reduce its dependence on Russian crude while the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted, global oil supplies could come under severe pressure.
Gupta warned that if crude prices rise beyond $100 per barrel, it could have a significant impact on India's external and domestic economic indicators. He noted that in such a scenario, the government might be required to pass on higher costs at fuel pumps, affecting domestic demand.
