India's Edible Oil Imports Soar to 11-Month High Ahead of Festival Season

India's edible oil refiners significantly increased their imports in August to prepare for the peak festival season, resulting in a record 1.54 million tonnes of imports, the highest level in 11 months.

This surge was largely driven by soyoil shipments, which reached a record 601,000 tonnes, a 21% month-on-month increase. The demand for soyoil is due to its price competitiveness compared to other alternatives.

However, sunflower oil imports dropped significantly by 38% to 157,000 tonnes, hitting a six-month low, due to ongoing supply chain disruptions in the Black Sea trade route.

The increase in import costs and currency fluctuations may affect company margins in the coming months. Investors will be monitoring how the industry copes with these challenges.
