India's Gas Growth Hinges on Infrastructure Overhaul
The International Gas Union (IGU) has released a report highlighting India's need to improve its gas market and pipeline infrastructure to unlock the potential of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
According to the IGU, expanding LNG import capacity alone will not be enough to drive India's long-term natural gas growth. The country needs faster investment in pipeline infrastructure, gas distribution networks, and gas-intensive industries.
The report noted that India has significantly increased its LNG regasification capacity in recent years, but investment in transmission and distribution infrastructure has failed to keep pace, limiting the country's ability to expand gas consumption.
The IGU also emphasized the importance of reforms to pricing mechanisms, market access, and regulations to sustain long-term growth in gas demand. The report highlighted that India's reliance on Gulf-sourced LNGs and LPGs makes it vulnerable to disruptions in global supply chains.
