India's Jet Fuel Price Hike: Airlines Bracing for Higher Costs Amid Global Uncertainty

Airlines in India may face higher costs after a significant jet fuel price hike. The Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices for domestic airlines increased by ₹6.28 per litre, or 5.46%, from ₹115 to ₹121.28 per litre on September 1, 2023.

The rise in ATF prices comes at a time when global crude oil markets are facing renewed uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions and concerns about oil supplies. Brent crude and WTI crude prices have increased, which could add pressure to aviation fuel costs.

Airline operating costs can be as high as 35% to 40%, with ATF being one of the largest expenses. The latest increase may lead to higher airfares, but it does not guarantee an immediate or uniform price increase for passengers.
