India's LPG Consumption Drops 16% Amid PNG Shift and Supply Disruptions
India's liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumption plummeted by 16% in April-August, totaling 11.3 million tonnes compared to 13.4 million tonnes in the same period last year.
The decline is attributed to disruptions in LPG supplies following the West Asia war and a growing push to switch to piped natural gas (PNG), as advocated by the government.
According to data from the oil ministry's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell, LPG demand also dropped 16% in August alone, reaching 2.4 million tonnes compared to 2.9 million tonnes in August 2025.
The petroleum ministry has urged states and Union Territories to expedite the transition of households from LPG to PNG by appointing nodal officers to coordinate with gas distributors and oil marketing companies.
