India's Oil Imports Face Uncertainty Due to Russian Supply Disruptions
India's oil supply is facing uncertainty due to disruptions at Russian export terminals and ongoing security risks in the Red Sea. These challenges are threatening to raise procurement costs for Indian refiners, who rely heavily on affordable imported crude to maintain stable domestic fuel pricing.
The recent reports of Ukrainian actions targeting infrastructure around the Novorossiysk terminal have created uncertainty regarding the reliability of Russian oil shipments. If export volumes from this terminal decline or if Russian exporters reduce the discounts currently offered to Indian buyers, the cost of procurement will inevitably rise for Indian refiners.
Indian refiners, including large state-owned players like Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum, would then face a choice between absorbing these costs or passing them on. This could put pressure on their refining margins if they are forced to absorb the increased costs.
