India's Stock Markets Tumble Amid Crude Oil Price Surge

Indian stock markets saw a decline on Tuesday due to concerns about inflation triggered by rising crude oil prices. The Sensex dropped 388.19 points, or 0.49 per cent, while the Nifty 50 slipped below 24,500. The global oil benchmark Brent crude surged 2.18 per cent to USD 89.63 per barrel.

Experts point to geopolitical uncertainties and volatility surrounding weekly futures and options expiries as factors contributing to investor caution. Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking Ltd noted that renewed geopolitical concerns and rising crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment, with Brent crude nearing the USD 90 per barrel mark.

The BSE SmallCap Select index fared better, edging up 0.38 per cent. However, sectoral indices like Hospitals, Real Estate, FMCG, Commodities, Power, and Capital Goods declined significantly. Notable gainers included Focused IT, Housing Finance, IT, Energy, and Consumer Discretionary.
