India's Top Economist Calls for Return to Lower Ethanol Petrol
The Indian government's chief economic adviser has called for the return of E10 petrol amid concerns about potential damage to the country's old vehicle and two-wheeler fleet.
India introduced the E20 fuel blend in April, which is now the only type of fuel available at gas stations throughout the country. However, V Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Advisor of the Government of India, believes that restoring a lower ethanol content fuel, such as E10, would calm public concerns and protect existing vehicles.
Nageswaran's proposal is significant, as it marks the first time a senior government official has called for making more fuel options available to Indian drivers. The E20 fuel rollout is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan to reduce pollution and lower crude oil imports in the world's third-largest crude oil importer.
