India's Wheat Price Hike Sparks Concerns Over Export Potential

India's wheat prices have jumped by over ₹150 per quintal following the government's decision to lift its four-year ban on export of wheat and its products. This move comes as global wheat prices reach a three-year high, sparking concerns among some industry stakeholders.

New Delhi-based exporter Rajesh Jain Paharia noted that Indian wheat is at least $30 a tonne more expensive than imports from other origins. As a result, the country may struggle to compete in the global market, limiting its export potential.

However, others argue that the price hike will not have a significant impact on retail prices. The all-India average retail wheat price is currently ₹31.58 per kg, with prices ranging from ₹22 to ₹55 per kg depending on the location.

The government's decision to lift the export ban has been met with skepticism by some industry experts. They point out that the country's wheat production this year is estimated at a record 120.66 million tonnes, while stocks are at a five-year high of 50.53 million tonnes as of August 1.

Furthermore, global wheat prices have surged due to concerns over weather-related issues and disruptions in exports from major producers such as Russia. The US Department of Agriculture has also forecasted lower US wheat production this year, which may further drive up global prices.
