Indonesia Set to Dominate Global Vegetable Oil Market by 2050
Indonesia has become a crucial player in meeting the world's vegetable oil needs due to its significant contribution of palm oil, according to Tungkot Sipayung, founder and executive director of the Palm Oil Agribusiness Strategic Policy Institute (PASPI).
The global demand for vegetable oil is projected to reach 300 million tons by 2050, with palm oil set to account for around 60% of that total. This is driven by increasing population growth, rising income levels, and industrialization.
Currently, the world's vegetable oil production stands at 215.6 million tons, but this figure is expected to fall short of meeting future demand due to limitations in productivity and land availability for crops like soybean, rapeseed, and sunflower.
Palm oil, however, offers a more sustainable solution with its high productivity rate, reaching eight to ten times higher than other major vegetable oil sources. Additionally, the industry involves millions of micro, small, and medium enterprises along the supply chain.
