Indonesian Chicken Farmers Protest Plummeting Egg Prices Amid Rising Feed Costs

Protests by chicken farmers have erupted in several regions of Indonesia over plummeting egg prices and rising feed costs. The demonstrations, which began on August 10, 2026, took place in Central Java, Yogyakarta Special Region, and South Sulawesi.

The average price of broiler eggs at the consumer level has dropped to Rp 29,319 per kilogram (kg), below the government-set reference selling price of Rp 30,000 per kg. This reflects a decline in egg prices at the layer chicken farmer level, which fell by 12.78 percent from the government's reference purchase price.

The National Food Agency reported that the national average price of dry shelled corn, a key feed ingredient, reached Rp 5,824 per kg on August 9, 2026, exceeding the government's purchase price of Rp 5,500 per kg. The cost of mixed feed has also increased, from Rp 6,200 per kg to Rp 8,000 per kg in just three months.

Industry experts point out that the rising production costs are due to higher prices for imported raw materials, a weakening rupiah, and the impact of PT Berdikari's monopoly on imported feed ingredients, particularly soybean meal (SBM).
